Case Study

Gabriel's Custom Engagement Ring

Gabriel came to us with love in his heart and an idea that he needed to turn into reality. This is the process that we went through to help him pop that all important question.

Design Consult and Brief

Gabriel knew exactly what he wanted: an 18-karat yellow gold engagement ring featuring a round diamond around 2.5 carats. The design needed to accommodate a fitted wedding band that would one day sit flush alongside it.

He chose a 2mm band width and requested six eagle claws to secure the diamond. Rather than a cathedral-style setting, he preferred a fully round solitaire mount - clean and classic.

The standout feature was a double hidden halo beneath the centre stone. Invisible from above, this secret circle of diamonds would catch the light from the sides, adding sparkle while maintaining the solitaire's timeless simplicity from the top view.

Initial Concept

As an initial ‘rough’ concept, we produced this CAD design for Gabriel.

Refine the Design

After consultation with Gabriel, we decided the claws should not be dead straight but should rather be a little more rounded. Also, he’d prefer to add at least one more small diamond into each hidden halo. The result was an updated design factoring in the above elements.

Almost there ...

Now that we had the basic design captured it was time to perfect the design and fine tune it. The height of the ring was important. We and the client didn’t wat the wearer to feel uncomfortable or concerned about the height of the ring and we didn’t want the ring catching on things as it was too high. The initial height in the design was 8.64mm and we felt we could do better. So we tweaked it slightly to lower the height to 8.24mm.

Design Confirmation

Now that we had basically finalised the design Gabriel was having difficulty understanding how high the ring would actually sit on the finger. He was also having difficulty picturing the difference between the original height of the design compared to the updated version.

To ensure that he was 100% comfortable with the design we printed it out with our resin printer so that he could see it "in the flesh".

Design approved - on with the show!

A 3D-printed model gave Gabriel the chance to see and feel his design before production began. Holding the physical prototype in his hands provided the reassurance he needed - he was thrilled with what we'd created together and gave us the green light to proceed.

Once the diamond arrived at our workshop, our craftsmen began bringing the ring to life. Each stage of production required precision and patience, from casting the 18-karat gold to setting the hidden halo and securing the centre stone with six perfectly aligned claws.

The final step was polishing - transforming the crafted piece into a flawless, mirror-bright finish that would showcase both the gold's warm glow and the diamond's brilliance.

The ring was complete and ready for collection, marking the end of one journey and the beginning of another.
